HISTORY of CAMP CHERITH® in PENNSYLVANIA

After Pocono Camp Cherith became an independent camp in September, 1983, Pioneer Clubs headquarters saw the need for a Cherith camp to continue to serve club members in Pennsylvania.  After a search of the area, Tel Hai Camp was selected as the site for the summer of 1984.  Dianne Liddy was chosen to be the director; she held several recruitment meetings in churches and homes in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware area, including one at the home of Paula Worden.  Nearly 100 campers attended that summer, in two one-week sessions.  Many of the staff traveled to Pennsylvania from the Wheaton headquarters, including Virginia Patterson (Pioneer Clubs President), Judy Bryson (Vice President), and Eva Lee Henderson (National Camp Cherith Administrator).  All of the staff from the local area were invited to form a committee to plan camp for the summer of 1985.  Those members were:  Carolyn Hedrick, Adrienne Gordy, Rose Robinson, Deborah Meyers, Susan Urwin, and Paula Worden.

Gregg Miller (Youth Pastor from Red Lion Evangelical Association) was asked to chair the committee.

Before the summer of 1985, Paula Worden was asked to become the director for 1986. Training began that summer and continued at the annual fall directors' conference.

CCPA has continued at the Tel Hai Camp location, adding an additional week in 1986.  Two boys' weekends were held and then the first boys' week took place in 1992 with Dick Smith as the director.  The boys' week moved to Mt. Lou San Bible Camp ( near Harrisburg) in 1994 and 1995 with Ron Brooke directing, and returned to Tel Hai in 1996 as a parallel week.

Before the 1997 camp season, the position of camp administrator was created.  Paula Worden was named Camp Administrator/Girls Camp Director and Joe Sanelli served as Boys Program Director.  In 1998, Jeff Sherwood became Boys Camp Director.

Tel Hai Camp has changed over the years as well. The Rec. Hall was enclosed and a new craft hut erected.  The original pool (across the street) was replaced with the new gym/pool facility, a new horse barn was built, and the dining hall was enlarged.  All building names were changed in 1994.  The bathrooms in Pine, the largest cabin, were renovated before the summer of 1996.

Beechwood Lodge was opened in 2000, making more comfortable space for the Ceramics activity, and providing Staff training space for us.

2005 brings a new adventure adding co-ed week at Camp Conquest. We are excited about the possibilities for expansion at this additional site.

Throughout the changes, the philosophy of Camp Cherith remains the same.  With God's blessing, CCPA will continue to reach and disciple campers for Jesus Christ!
